Equal education and reading are human and civil rights. Your gift upholds those rights for all Memphis children, no matter where they live.

Your gift will train and support teachers to serve in under-resourced schools so that the children of Memphis receive the education they deserve.

Please fill out this form if you would like to make recurring gifts via savings or checking accounts.

“There are students in neighborhoods who do not have access to great, high-quality teachers. This is an opportunity gap.”

— Simona Reid, Class of 2023

Ways to give

Your gift will close the opportunity gap.

  • Become a monthly donor to Memphis Teacher Residency and experience the power of consistent support. Your recurring contribution will create lasting change in the lives of teachers and students, amplifying our impact throughout the year.

Make a lasting impact on the students of Memphis with a one-time gift. Your contribution, no matter the amount, will bring Christian love expressed through equal education by empowering educators and transforming the lives of students in our community.

  • Give in honor or memory of a teacher, relative, or friend.

We will send a personalized card to those you honor with your gift, or the family member(s) of the person you memorialize. Please include the names and addresses for those to whom acknowledgements should be sent. The amount of your gift will remain confidential, and you will receive an acknowledgement of your gift for your tax records.

    Give now.

  • Invite friends and family to join you in ensuring that every Memphis student has an effective teacher and receives the education that is their civil right.

    1. Crowdfunding

Whether you want to sponsor an MTR resident’s training and living expenses (estimated cost $25,000) or sponsor two teachers to become a Reading Specialist (estimated cost $10,000), or anywhere in between, you can start a crowdfunding page to ensure that all Memphis students have access to the teachers and education they deserve. Email Angie if you’d like to start a fundraising page to have friends and family join you.

Many people believe that their wealth is too meager to even consider planning a future charitable gift or planned gift to an organization they love. However, when one considers retirement accounts, home equity, and life insurance, they often find they have a larger estate than they imagined. Giving through your estate can have a lasting and transformative impact on MTR’s ongoing effort to make equal education a reality for Memphis students. Here are some ways to do so:

    1. Wills and Living Trusts

Giving through a bequest or living trust is the perfect way for you to continue your call to ensure equal education to all Memphis students. Please include Memphis Teacher Residency in your Will or Living Trust, and your legacy will continue after your lifetime. Use language such as this in your estate: “I, [name], give, devise, and bequeath to Memphis Teacher Residency, the sum of [$____ or ____% of my estate, or the residue of my estate.]”

    2. Life Insurance and Investment and Retirement Assets

Many people don’t know who their beneficiaries are, or if they have even named a contingent or secondary beneficiary on their life insurance policies, retirement, and investment accounts. Please consider reviewing your beneficiary information on your 401(k), 403(b), IRA annuities, or Life Insurance policies. You can name MTR as your primary or contingent (secondary) beneficiary on your investment accounts. Contact the investment company that houses your private accounts to request a beneficiary form. Please use the following language: “I designate Memphis Teacher Residency to receive the sum of [$____ or ____% of my account/policy].”

    3. Gifts of Real Estate

A gift of real estate can continue to brighten futures and change lives through the power of equal education. You can donate a residence or other real estate to MTR and potentially receive a significant income tax deduction. Please notify Angie by email or phone should you be interested in donating real estate to MTR so that we can perform the due diligence required by MTR’s Board of Directors to ensure that you can achieve your philanthropic goals within our policies.

    4. Gifts of Stock

Giving appreciated stock is one of the most tax-savvy ways to give. Your gift goes further than if you sold the shares and donated the proceeds to MTR because you avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation and you also can take a tax deduction on the value of the shares you donated. To make a gift of stock, please provide your brokerage with the following Depository Trust Company (DTC) instructions

    1. DTC #

      Name of MTR brokerage firm

      For credit to: Acct #

      Tax ID#: 26-4440905

      Account Name: Memphis Teacher Residency

Please notify Angie by email or phone in advance of the transfer. This notice is often our only way of determining the identity of a donor and where the gift should be directed.

    5. Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts

You can give to Memphis Teacher Residency, receive a tax deduction, and enjoy a lifetime of income. Please ask your advisor how you can establish a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust with Memphis Teacher Residency as the beneficiary.

The information contained herein is for explanatory purposes only and is not intended to be used as tax advice. Memphis Teacher Residency recommends that you contact a professional advisor who can provide you with additional information on how your participation in the programs mentioned on this site may affect your personal tax situation.

  • We value and appreciate your gifts of time and talent as much as we do your monetary gifts. Some of the ways you can get involved include:

    • Host lunch at MTR for the residency class and join them for the meal

    • Provide supplies for an MTR teacher’s classroom

    • Be a daily prayer partner! Pray for each student in an MTR teacher’s class by name, or pray for each resident by name

    • Help an MTR teacher plan and prepare for holiday class parties during the year

    • Invite a few residents each month to join you and your family for a home-cooked meal. You will have met them all by the end of the year!

    • Be a regular volunteer at one of our literacy partner schools

    • Read to students in an MTR teacher’s class once a month

    • Be a Memphis Literacy Conference volunteer annually on the last Saturday of July

    • Help secure sponsors for the Memphis Literacy Conference

    • Tell your friends about MTR and bring them by for a visit

    • Encourage aspiring teachers to consider receiving their training at MTR

    • Invite an MTR leader or teacher to speak at your Church or at a community meeting
